Located on the intersection of Oakwood and Vaughan Road in the York District of Toronto, the Co-op Housing provides the occupants with 2/4/5-bedroom units, spacious common spaces and private greenhouses.
With the aim to establish the site as a “5 Point Area”, an additional program of a market was incorporated into the design of the building. The market space consists of small stalls which can be rented out by the residents as well as the neighbourhood. Assisting with economic growth while improving the relationship of the people of the community, the market reflects the Little Jamaica nearby: a place of rich culture and the home of many members of POC. The housing promotes both a strong sense of community, where people want to engage, and a flourishing local economy, which can grow stronger over time.
The continuous use of CLT with polycarbonate panels throughout the building creates a harmonious transition between the residential and public programs. The translucency of the building created through the plastic corrugated sheet creates visual connections with the street and the fellow residents. With the building’s design strategies and selective material use, the project aims to contribute to the housing and climate crises of the Oakwood-Vaughan neighbourhood.
