The University of Waterloo School of Architecture is excited to bring alumni together during a lively and eventful reunion in the eternal city of Rome. Alumni from all years are invited to join in the events to take place October 5-8, 2022. The four-day itinerary includes opportunities to visit the Rome programme studio, socialize with students, staff and Faculty, tour the city via foot and bus, attend a guest lecture (speaker TBC), and enjoy traditional Roman cuisine – all alongside your fellow alumni in the historical city of Rome.  

The base cost for the trip is $500 per person and includes all social events as follows: welcome breakfast at the Rome Studio, moonlight terrace reception at the House of the Knights of Rhodes, special guest lecture, traditional Roman dinner reception held at the beloved Checchino dal 1887, full day villa bus tour through Caprarola and Bagnaia, and a closing talk over morning coffee at the Pantheon. There is an option to add on a concert at the Auditorium Parco della Musica for an additional fee. A reservation will be made at Ripa 12 one evening for guests wishing to gather for dinner; menu items will be served à la carte.

DAY 1: Wednesday, October 5, 2022  

Morning: Welcome Registration at the Rome Studio 
Location: University of Waterloo Rome Studio, Piazza di Sant'Apollonia, 3, 00153 Roma RM, Italy

Waterloo Architecture Alumni Reunion | ROME will launch with registration and a welcome breakfast at the University of Waterloo Rome Studio, Piazza S. Apollonia, 3 (Piazza S. Maria in Trastevere). This location is the home of Waterloo Architecture’s Rome Programme. The Rome Programme moved into the Trastevere studio in 1992 and has since expanded to multiple floors. Tour the studio. Meet the students and faculty teaching in Rome. 

Daytime: Renaissance Walking Tour led by Professor Rick Haldenby

In the afternoon, alumni will tour the city on foot with a historical Renassaince walking tour led by former Director of the School of Architecture, Professor Rick Haldenby. Starting at the Piazza Santa Maria in Trastevere, guests will visit historic Roman landmarks such as Palazzo Spada, Palazzo Farnese, Cancelleria, Largo Argentina and many others, before ending at Capitoline Hill. Bring your walking shoes. 

Evening: Moonlight Terrace Reception  
Location: House of the Knights of Rhodes, Piazza del Grillo, 1, Rome, 00184  

In the evening, guests will enjoy refreshments at the House of the Knights of Rhodes, the result of a centuries-old stratification of monuments on the area that housed the Forum of Augustus in the imperial age. End your day in this stunning architectural complex located in the heart of the city.  


DAY 2: Thursday, October 6, 2022

Evening Event: Traditional Roman Dinner 
Location: Checchino dal 1887, Via di Monte Testaccio, 30, Rome, 00153 

In the evening, alumni will gather with Rome Programme Faculty and staff for a dinner reception held at the historical Checchino dal 1887 — family-owned and beloved by locals for more than a century. After a day on foot, relax and enjoy traditional Roman cuisine alongside your peers. Join the current Director, Professor Anne Bordeleau, for a special toast while learning about current initiatives taking place at the School of Architecture’s Rome and Cambridge campuses. 


DAY 3: Friday, October 7, 2022 

Day Time: Villa Bus Tour 
Tour Start Location: University of Waterloo Rome Studio, Piazza di Sant'Apollonia, 3, 00153 Roma RM, Italy 

On day 3, guests will travel by bus from Rome to the picturesque village of Caprarola, located in the Lazio region of Central Italy, and home to Villa Farnese. From there, you will travel to the charming, historical village of Bagnaia. Guests will end their trip with a scenic drive back to the city before dinner hours.  

Evening: After-hours Dinner at Ripa 12 (optional)

In the evening guests will have the option of joining fellow alumni for dinner at Ripa 12. In the heart of Trastevere, dine among locals in a calm, relaxing environmental among vintage decor. A reservation has been made for your group, where guests can taste fresh seafood of the Mediterranean. Offered à la carte.  

Evening: Concert (optional) 
Location: Auditorium Parco della Musica, Via Pietro de Coubertin, 30, Rome, 00196 

End the day by attending a concert at the sophisticated Auditorium Parco della Musica, designed by Renzo Piano.  The extraordinary complex is only a few minutes away from the city centre, housing performances that example the living and vibrant culture of Rome. Tickets can be purchased after registration for an additional fee.  


DAY 4: Saturday, October 8, 2022 

Morning: Coffee at the Pantheon 

On our last day together, please join us at the Pantheon, the architectural wonder of the Roman Empire. Enjoy a coffee and pastry from a nearby café, as you bid farewell and safe travels to your fellow alumni. Professor Rick Haldenby and Professor Anne Bordeleau will give an informal goodbye and send off to all — until we meet again at our next Waterloo Architecture Alumni Reunion.
