Disco Visit

A sonic chamber embedded within the disused hulls of an industrial freight ship on its route to dismantlement becomes an interactive performance space. Themes from Orpheus and Eurydice are translated into a spatial organization that is largely defined by the tale’s dualities, especially darkness and light. A southward route is proposed, beginning in the Saint Lawrence sea way and ending in Brownsville, Texas, where the only shipbreaking yard in North America exists. From there the embedded barrels will be detached from the ship and transported to a rural site in Roma, Starr county. Here, the project will provide its reverberant chambers to the grassy, desert landscape. Through a study of the hierarchy between performer and spectator, the project asks how we may reinterpret the theatrical experience.
