Spaces of Assembly works at the intersection of light industry and York University campus, employing the independent nature of the field to design for a Keele Street that develops over time. In engaging with industrial language and form, and recognizing its economy and flexibility, this building re-imagines a connection between the future of York University and the surrounding industrial zone. Spaces of Assembly provides manufacturing space and retail areas for existing local manufacturers on the ground floor, giving them visibility and exposure to the student community. Mixed income and student housing is located in the small towers above. The intermediary mezzanine level houses student and public amenities, allowing tenants to engage with the local business owners and employees below and study the systems at work in their community. This proposal mixes uses and users in the pursuit of creating meaningful social and spatial relationships between York and the industrial zone to the east of the site.
